If you ever visited the splendid landscapes, towns and villages on the North Sea shores, you will understand why it is important to preserve and fully develop the unique potential of these coastal areas. However, at the moment the practical tools for creating and implementing integrated, sustainable development strategies are missing in many coastal areas. SUSCOD stands for SUStainable Coastal Development in practice. In this project, the participants share their experiences with implementing practical solutions for integrated coastal zone management in their own pilot projects. They try out tools that have been used successfully elsewhere, and report how well these tools worked in their particular situation. Based on these experiences, a set of tried and tested tools is collected in a web-based toolbox, which will be made available to coastal practitioners in other coastal regions.
The aim of SUSCOD is to offer easy access to a collection of practical instruments that contribute to the main objective of the European Union’s North Sea Region Programme: to enhance the overall quality of life for this region’s residents, by ensuring a strong economy, high environmental qualities and communities that are viable, vibrant and attractive places to live and work. The ambition is to establish a platform for ICZM expertise that will support and inspire sustainable coastal development for decades to come.
